The Air Force Historical Foundation’s 2008 Awards Banquet will be held on Monday, October 6, 2008 at the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. This event will celebrate and honor those who have contributed extensively to the making and recording of Air Force history.

Schedule of Events

Ops Talks (Current USAF Issues), Crystal V & VI

4:30-6:00 p.m. 
Join Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula, Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, as he reviews current Air Force operations, logistics, ISR and other issues for an informal talk, followed by a question-and-answer session. 

Light food and drinks will be available (cash bar).

Awards Banquet, Grand Ballroom

7:00-10:00 p.m.

The awards banquet will feature General Ronald R. Fogleman, former Chief of Staff of the Air Force, as the guest speaker, and the Foundation will present four prestigious awards during the banquet.  This year’s Air Force Historical Foundation awards recipients are outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the Air Force and its history.

This year’s recipient of the General Carl “Tooey” Spaatz Award is Maj. Gen. John R. Alison, USAFR (Retired), a former Flying Tiger who was commander of the 367th Fighter Group and deputy commander of the First Air Commando Force during World War II. The award honors sustained, significant contributions to the making of Air Force history through a lifetime of service, and its first recipient was General David C. Jones, USAF (Retired).

The Maj. Gen. I. B. Holley Award honors sustained, significant contributions to the research, interpretation, and documentation of Air Force history throughout a lifetime of service.  Following its inaugural presentation last year to Maj. Gen. Holley, USAFR (Retired), the 2008 award will be presented to Brig. Gen. Alfred F. Hurley, USAF (Retired), PhD, who has published extensively on the history of air power and leaders in aviation and who is a former chair of the Department of History at the US Air Force Academy and former President of the University of North Texas System for 25 years.

The Best Air Power History Book Award for 2007 will be presented to Col. Stephen P. Randolph, USAF (Retired), PhD, for his Powerful and Brutal Weapons: Nixon, Kissinger, and the Easter Offensive.

The Air Power History Best Article Award will be presented to Lt. Col. Donald R. Baucom, USAF (Retired), PhD, for his "Wakes of War: Contrails and the Rise of Air Power, 1918-1945," published in the Summer & Fall editions of Air Power History.  He has previously received the Leopold Prize by the Organization of American Historians for his book The Origins of SDI.

Awards banquet attire:

Business attire or military uniform (service dress, utility uniforms, flight suits, and BDUs acceptable).

Fees for the banquet (and reception):

$40 for active military and active civil servants (any service, any nation). 
$50 for members of the Air Force Historical Foundation. 
$60 for all others.
