Awards / Major General I.B. Holley Award

Created in 2007, this award honors a sustained, significant contribution to the documentation of Air Force history during a lifetime of service. Its inaugural presentation was to Maj. Gen. Holley (ret.) as a tribute his decades of assistance, support and encouragement to military historians.

USAF Chief of Staff General T. Michael Moseley presents the first Maj. Gen. I.B. Holley Award in 2007, which was accepted by C.R. (Dick) Anderegg on behalf of Gen. Holley.

Maj. Gen. Holley has been a visiting professor at the U.S. Military Academy and has taught military history, the history of technology, and other subjects at Duke University since 1947.

He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus, and was chosen to receive the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1989.

Gen. Holley has written books, papers, articles, essays, reviews, and critiques for six decades, and has demonstrated a professional interest in historical subjects as far apart as the American highway revolution, air weapons development and acquisition, and intellectual history.

The Major General I.B. Holley Award winner for 2008 was Brig. Gen. Alfred F. Hurley, (USAF ret.), PhD, who received the honor at the Air Force Historical Foundation’s Awards Banquet in Arlington, Virginia. Brig. Gen. Hurley – a former chair of the Department of History at the U.S. Air Force Academy, as well as a former President of the University of North Texas System – has published extensively on air power during his career.
